Sonya Rankine is a Ngarrindjeri, Narungga, Ngadjuri and Wirangu multidisciplinary artist, cultural educator, weaver, singer-songwriter and emerging playwright based in South Australia. Her practice is grounded in culture, storytelling and connection to Country, bringing together traditional and contemporary weaving, music and performance. Working under her business, Lakun Mara, Sonya creates woven sculptures, jewellery, wearable art and commissioned works using natural fibres and contemporary materials. Weaving is central to her practice, reflecting the interconnectedness of culture, identity and community. Sonya also facilitates cultural workshops, artist talks and community engagement programs for schools, organisations and corporate groups, creating culturally safe spaces for learning through hands-on creative experiences. She collaborates with galleries, festivals, designers and cultural organisations on exhibitions, public art and bespoke commissions, with each project guided by cultural integrity, respect and the sharing of First Nations knowledge through contemporary artistic practice.
